Climate change and global warming have recently made headlines. Devastating forest fires across the Mediterranean, monsoon-like floods in central Europe and warming temperatures have put climate change front and centre.

This week a landmark UN report heaped fresh pressure on the government and reminded us that we too must make changes to how we live. According to UK Government National Statistics, residential properties make up 15% of the UK total climate emissions

Green Mortgages Are Here!
Green mortgage products offer preferential terms to property buyers if they can demonstrate that the property for which they are borrowing meets certain environmental standards.

Increasingly we are seeing lenders incentivising borrowers to consider the environment when taking out a loan secured on a property.

For example, currently, Paragon’s 80% Buy to let products are only available to landlords via the lender’s Green Mortgage range. To qualify for these products borrowers have to evidence their property has met minimum energy-efficient standards. 

Halifax recently offered a £500 cashback with their Green Living Reward Scheme which was available to borrowers who make one or more eligible home improvements using the lender’s remortgage and purchase loans.

Additionally, RBS reward customers with energy-efficient homes by offering discounted 2 year and 5 year fixed rate mortgages to customers who are purchasing or remortgaging their home to Royal Bank with a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of A or B. You can also apply for a Green Home Mortgage if you’re buying a new-build property directly from the builder or developer.
